BIS - Biblioteca Italiana Seattle

Il Punto is pleased to offer Biblioteca Italiana Seattle (BIS), a library of books, movies and music in the Italian language. The BIS catalog includes almost 2,500 books available for free to the general public. It spans fiction, history, biography, art, cooking, travel, Italian language learning, and a sizable collection of children’s books. We also carry Italian DVDs and CDs. The BIS is free to anyone, members or on-members, but you must register as a BIS patron in-person to borrow books THIS REQUIREMENT IS SUSPENDED DUE TO COVID-19. Il Punto members are automatically also BIS patrons. Check out our catalog!

Hours of operation and location

COVID-19 UPDATE: YES, WE ARE OPEN! Due to the current social distancing restrictions, the BIS operates only for book pick-up and drop-off by appointment. No visitors are allowed inside Il Punto, but you can still borrow books by following this procedure:

  1. Browse our catalog and select the books you want.
  2. Email bis@ilpuntoseattle.org indicating the titles and authors of the books you are requesting. 
  3. A volunteer will confirm the book availability and set up a time you to pick up the books at the BIS/Il Punto location. 

The BIS is co-located with Il Punto, 14300 Greenwood Ave N, Suite E, Seattle, WA 98133.

Book donations

We accept donations of new and used books in good condition at the discretion of the BIS staff. Contact bis@ilpuntoseattle.org to make arrangements for your book donation. We are especially interested in:

  • Modern Italian fiction and poetry, post-World War II
  • American literature and international classics translated into Italian
  • Bilingual Italian/English editions of Italian works.
  • Originals or copies of documents of historical value relevant to the Italian experience in Seattle, such as old passports, immigration papers, correspondence, member registries of historical Italian clubs in the PNW, old photos portraying the Italian-American experience in Seattle and the PNW.
  • Old books of historical or documentary importance, as determined by the staff of the BIS.
  • Other materials, at the discretion of the staff.

We do not accept:

  • Children’s books (< 10 year old): we have a lot!
  • Magazines
  • Travel and tourist guides older than 1 year
  • Textbooks, teacher’s manuals, dictionaries: we have a lot! We might accept newer Italian language textbooks, at the discretion of the staff.

Only basic computer skills are necessary, besides a passion for Italian culture and availability once or twice every 6 months. High school and college students or instructors looking for internship or community service opportunities are strongly encouraged to contact us!
